My Connections to Hauora

LI: to write the my connections to Hauora

For one of my tasks for Hauora I did some work on my connections to Hauora. I not only did my connections to Hauora but I also did the my communities connections with Hauora, and my family's connection with Hauora. I also did what I thought about Hauora.

Making Connections to Problem Solving

LI: to use Tangram to make connections to problem solving.

For one of our inquiry/math's tasks this week we made Tangrams. Tangrams are supposed to be originally created in the ancient times in China. Normally in the 18th century people delivered things on ships and a way for the sailors to pass the time they used Tangrams. Tangrams are a dissect puzzle, dissect puzzles are puzzles that are cut out and put back together to make something.

First we followed the instructions to cut out an A4 piece of paper into certain shapes (Shapes of the Tangram). After we cut them into the shapes we were set a challenge to use the cut out shapes we had to create a square. After that we challenged ourselves by trying to make other things out of the shapes we had.

Negative Numbers

LI: to use the most efficient strategy to solve the maths question.

For maths this week we learnt about negative numbers. A negative number is a number that is less than zero. This week we were learning to add negative numbers. After that we solved some equations with negative numbers, we then worked in groups to make a dlo about negative numbers.

10-5-7-10-10 Writing

LI: to use the 10-5-7-10-10 strategy.

For our second writing session we used the same method as last time but we added a bit more time to improve our writing. We made 10-5-7-10-10, we added 10 minutes at the start to make time to plan, we also added 10 minutes at the end to draft and check the story. For this story a person is rock climbing up a mountain.

Experimenting with Ultraviolet light

LI: to find the most effective UV filter.

LS2 has been trialing the electronic sensor for the kiwrious project. We are working with Suranga, Sonia, Evan, Dawn and Yvonne from the AHL at the Auckland University. I found that the red paper was the most efficient filter to keep Zally safe from the UV light. My DLO will show you how I did this.

5-7-10 Writing

LI: to use the 5-7-10 writing strategy to improve our writing

Lightning never strikes twice, does it?

That was the question that occupied their frightened minds as they crouched, huddled together, next to the pile of dusty sacks in the base of the windmill. As they cowered in fear they heard loud claps of thunder surrounding them inside the windmill. The claps of thunder surrounded the base of the windmill like echoes. Everyone in the group

Soon they realized that the windmill was a bad place to hide because it would be used as a conductor to attract lightning from the storm. If the windmill were struck by lightning the windmill would catch fire and endanger them inside the windmill. So then one member of the group got the courage to go outside of the windmill, before he put his first step out through the exit lighting and struck a tree. When he saw that he knew that he wouldn’t be able to get help without getting injured himself.

1 hour in, no one has come to help them and they have no way of getting help. The one and only way for them to make it out unhurt is by waiting until the storm dies out. Waiting, and waiting, and waiting.

After a long time of waiting, the storm seemed to be going away, soaking wet they finally went outside of the windmill. They saw that most of the crops around the windmill were destroyed but no one was hurt and that was all that mattered to them.

That was my story about people being stuck in a windmill while there is a bad storm outside. We used the 5-7-10 strategy. The 5-7-10 strategy is a strategy that can be done with a partner, first you have 5 minutes to wright the story, second you have seven minutes each to talk about the writing and third you use ten minutes to finish off the story itself.

Volleyball

LI: to use all of our volleyball skills we learnt in the past weeks.

For our volley ball session this week we were learning to spike. A spike is an attacking technique were you hit the ball with one hand over the net while jumping. We played some games where if we wanted to spike we had to receive first, set second and spike last. But if we were to spike on the first or second touch that means the point wouldn't count.

Pizza - Food Tech

LI: To learn how to make a pizza.

At food tech today we followed the recipe to make a beef and bbq pizza. First we got our equipment and ingredients. We then put tomato paste onto the base of the pizza with carrots, mushrooms, onions, meet balls, cheese and bbq sauce. The hardest part was cutting the onions because we would always start crying, but it was worth it because we got to eat our amazing pizza.

Seven Stars of Matariki

LI: to do the te reo challenges.

For one of our Te Reo challenges that we were tasked with we were to create a DLO about our drawings of the seven stars of Matariki. The seven stars of Matariki are a cluster of stars that can be seen on the day of Matatriki. I drew the seven stars and put them into their places.

What is an Optical Illusion

LI: to explain what an optical illusion is.

For one of our lessons we had on light was about and an optical illusion. An optical illusion is something you get tricked into seeing. The eye works by projecting an image of whats being seen by the person to the back of the eye, witch then leads to your brain to process the image. But in this case with an optical illusion the images are coming in to fast so then they overlap each other, when our brains process it the brain gets tricked and makes the eye see something that is not. We then worked in groups to create the DLO you see above.

Matariki Summary

LI: to summaries what Matariki was all about.

For our last Matariki DLO this week our group went on to a summarising template, and we wrote down 20 important words about Matariki, when then chose the six most important words, and after that we used those words to create a summary of whats Matariki.

Navigation by the Stars

LI: to explain how they used the stars to navigate.

For our fourth DLO for our Matariki tasks me and my group chose the topic of navigation by the stars. When early Polynesians navigated they used the position of the stars, the sun, the moon to find out where they are at sea. They would also use their surroundings to see if there was an island nearby. They also used the conditions the crops were in (dead, blooming & alive) to see what season they were in at the momement.

Matariki Harvesting

LI: to explain how they harvested crops for Matariki

For our third DLO for our Matariki tasks we were to create a DLO about how they harvested crops for Matariki. The tools they used were called Ko, Timo, etc. Ko was similar to a hoe and it was used as a loosening tool. On Matariki they would harvest all of their crops and have a huge feast, they would usually cook the crops in a hangi.

Why is Matariki Important

LI: to learn why is Matariki important.

For our second DLO for our Matariki tasks, we were to create a DLO about why is Matariki important. Matariki is important because we can find out the history of our ancestors and how they got here, and its also important because it can tell what type of season is the coming season so that they can prepare for crops in different conditions. We worked in the same groups of three to create this DLO.

What is Matariki

LI: to explain what Matariki is.

For our first DLO for our Matariki tasks was to create a DLO about what Matariki is. We had choices of what to pick for a topic and my group chose this topic. Matariki is a special occasion where people get all of there crops and eat it in something they call a "Hangi" (basically an underground oven). You can also see a specific cluster of stars, if the stars were bright the coming season would be a good one for the crops, but if they had a dimmed light it was most likely that is was going to be a bad season for the crops.

Optical Illusion

LI: to learn about optical illusions.

When we figure that out we experimented with some objects, we then created a DLO about it.
