Celebrating the Summer Learning Journey

 LI: to celebrate our PBS SLJ participants.

Over the holiday's our senior students participated in a holiday learning program call the Summer Learning journey. Us as a school found the activities included in the program really interesting and we found them to be enjoyable. Other than the activities Nano girl kept us occupied with fun experiments to every Monday. To celebrate our achievements PBS held a special assembly with new guests; Mrs Grant and Mrs Paleti. They presented the certificates and the prizes for the most exceptional bloggers over the holiday period.

Summer Learning Journey

Over the last holiday, children from schools all over NZ participated in a learning program called the summer learning journey. The summer learning journey is a program were kids blog about different tasks and comment on other people's blogs to get points, if you got the highest amount of points in your school you've might of gotten a prize.

Own Choice

For the last task of week two I had to do the same as last week and pick a person who interests me and show what they did, their name and how they impacted others.

Leading by Example

LI: to research about the people who have changed the world.
Today for the second task of day 5 of week 2 of the summer learning journey I learnt that Mother Teresa and Princess Diana did some extraordinary things, in doing so my task that I had to do was to do an act of kindness to a random person, m act of kindness was to my dad and I cleaned his car and I helped him to sort out his tools for our house renovations.

Everyday Hero's

LI: to help or hero's in need.
This week for the first task of the fifth day of the second week of the SLJ I had to brainstorm five ways on how our community could support emergency services that help people affected by the fires in Australia and that put out the fires. I then had to make a video out of it, here's the link.

Wise Words

LI: to research about the people who have changed the world.
For the last task of the fourth day of the second week of the SLJ I learnt Apirana Ngata and Dame Whina Cooper had some really wise words to say, for this task I had to choose one of my role models to say some wise words, I chose my mum and a wise phrase that she uses a lot is "Seek the treasure you value most dearly: if you bow our head let it be to a lofty mountain".

Celebrating Diversity

LI: to learn about other peoples cultures.
For the second task of the fourth day of the second week of the SLJ I had to find out facts about specific indigenous communities (Ainu people, Australian Aboriginal people, The Inuit people, Papuan People and the Maya People), I then had to pick two communities and find two facts for each, the communities that I picked were the Ainu people and the Maya people. One fact of the Ainu people is that they live in the northern island of Japan and another is that back then the Ainu people couldn't speak their own language and were forced to speak Japanese. A fact about the Maya people is that they speak over 30 Maya languages and another fact is that words like corn, mother, house, sun and time sound identical in nearly all the Maya languages.

For the first task of the fourth day of the second week of the SLJ I learnt that back then in New Zealand history the natives used Whakatauki, whakatauki are basically Maori metaphors. The task I had to do was that I had to pick a Whakatauki that had meaning to me and make a poster about it, the whakatauki that had meaning to me was "Do you know where I'm from?".

Belle of the Ball

LI: to research about the people who have changed the world.
For the last task for the third day of the second week I learnt that Emma Watson did belle and that she started a worldwide book club, since she made a book club the task I had to do was that I had to make a book review of a book, the book that I reviewed was called Jedi Academy, this book is about a person named Victor Starspeeder making his way throughout his time at Jedi Academy.

The Right to an Education

LI: to learn about the people who have changed the world.
For the second task of the third day of the second week of the summer learning journey. I learnt that a person named Malala Yousafzai got shot on a school bus, she grew up in Pakistan where women couldn't go to school so that might of been the reason she got shot. After the injury she wrote books, for the task I had to write a short story at least 10 sentences or longer, my story is about an astronaut being friends with a martian and its 11 sentences long.

The Right to Vote

For the first task of the third day of the second week I had to learn that Kate Shepard was the first ever woman to be elected prime minister in New Zealand, for the task I had to choose a person to replace Kate Shepard on the ten dollar bill If Kate Shepard wasn't on the ten dollar bill. If were to replace it with someone I'd think I would change it to Jacinda Ardern because she is another woman who has been elected prime minister of New Zealand.

"I Have a Dream"

LI: to research about the people who have changed the world.
For the last task of the second day of the second week of the SLJ I had to learn about Rosa Parks and how she copped with segregation back then in 1950 - 1960, segregation was the policy where black people didn't have the same equal rights to white people. I had to write the problem, what Rosa Park did about it and what other people thought of what she was doing.

School Strike for Climate

LI: to research about the people who have changed the world.
For the second task of the second day of the second week I had to learn about a person named Greta Thunberg, she started a protest against climate change and how we could use energy other than gas fossil fuel and coal. In doing so I had to list three facts about the protest and a picture of how I can help, the picture of me is me putting rubbish in the bin.

Along walk to freedom

For the first task of the second day of week two of the summer learning journey I learnt that Nelson Mandela went to prison for his activism, while he was at the prison he had a journal to write about each day, I had to write about his time in prison and how I thought he felt about it. If I were Nelson Mandela and if I were prison I would be mad because it wasn't fair back then.

Dr Jessa Rogers Time Calculation

LI: to research about the people who have changed the world.
For this task I learnt that Dr Jessa Rogers won the NAIDOC Youth of the year award in 2010, for the task I had to calculate the amount of time between when she was born to when she got the award. My answer was 25 years 7 months and 2 days.

Taking the Lead

For this task I learnt that Barack Obama loves to spend time with his family, we then had to write our top five things to do, my top five are playing video games, watching a movie, eating, playing football and organizing the periodic elements in to their groups.

Own Choice

For the last task of the week I had the choice to pick anyone that interest me, I chose Neil deGrasse Tyson. We then had to write the persons name, their job, and how they impacted the world.

Swimming to Safety

LI: to research about the people who changed the world.
For the second task of the fifth day I had to read about a person named Yusra Mardini, Yusra Mardini lived in Syria and due to all the fighting she ran away on to a boat to go to another country, their boat engine broke, Yusra, her sister and three others got off the boat and swam to safety, she then lives in Germany.

Against the Odds

LI: to research about the people who changed the world.
For the first task of the fifth day we had to name three things that we treasure, one of the things that I treasure is my family because I love my family, I also treasure my dads axe because I used that axe to cut my very first log of wood, and I treasure my country because I live there.
 

Worth her Weight in Gold

LI: to research about people who changed the world.
For task three of day four of the summer learning journey we had to read about how Valerie Adams was from Tonga, we then had to  make a brochure about Tonga or somewhere that is important. I made my brochure about England because my grandfather was from there.
