Activity 14 Week 2 | Kiwi Jingle

LI: to create original lyrics for a parody of the Jingle Bells song.

For my fourteenth activity for the summer learning journey program, I was challenged at creating song lyrics for a parody of a song called "Jingle Bells". I made a copy of a slide show and created the lyrics off there, the slide show above will show my lyrics. I created two unique lyric slides and I seperated the two by using two chorus's. I found this challenge really interesting, because I don't do a lot of musical topics.

Activity 13 Week 2 | Cyphers

LI: to learn the different ciphers and how they decode certain texts.

For my thirteenth acivity for the summer learning journey I learnt about different ciphers and how they decode messages. I learnt about the Caesar cipher, Atbash cipher, Playfair cipher, and the Pigpen cipher. My favorite cipher was the Atbush cipher as it was the most simplistic but it was still challenging. The format of this cipher is that the alphabet is reversed ( A = Z B = Y, etc). I found this activity really fun because I enjoy doing ciphers and decoding secret messages in a text.

Activity 12 Week 2 | Santa's new Outfit

LI: to create a new outfit for Santa in the summer holidays.

Today for the twelfth activity for the summer learning journey program I was challenged at creating a new outfit for Santa. Before this I read a story called Hana Koko. This story was based around Santa's clothing. After I read the story I got onto creating santa's new outfit for the summer time. I then explained whats the name of this outfit, what was the inspiration of this outfit, and why I included the key components of the outfit.

Activity 11 Week 2 | Sound

LI: to learn how different amounts of space in a object can change the sound.

For the first task of the second week I learnt about how different amounts of space inside an object can change the output of the sound it will create. For this activity I created a xylophone using cups of water and paper tubes.  I learnt if you put lots of water in a cup it will create a high pitch, but if you put less water in a cup the opposite happens and it creates a low pitch. The pitch differs for how much water you use. The same with the paper tubes, if its longer it creates a lower pitch because the sound has to travel longer, but if it is a short tube the sound travels lesser creating a high pitch. I recorded a video a me experimenting both of these things.

Activity 10 Week 1 | Summer Haiku

LI: to create a summer Haiku.

This week for my tenth activity for the summer learning journey program I created a summer haiku. I based my summer Haiku off of eggs because during the summer I would always eat eggs for breakfast. So in the spirit of food and poems I created a Haiku about eggs and how good they are. A haiku is a Japanese styled poem using 5 syllables for the first and last lines, and 7 syllables for the 2nd line.

Activity 9 Week 1 | Doesn't Belong

LI: to give reasons why something isn't like everything else.

This week for my ninth summer learning journey activity I was challenged at finding reasons for why something doesn't belong with the others. I filled out the google slide show you see above with my answers of what doesn't belong of four items. I was tasked at finding a reason for all four items for being odd. I did that nine times, I also created my own "Doesn't belong" challenge on the last slide. Challenge yourself, and try my game on slide 11.

Activity 8 Week 1 | Song Chorus

LI: to create a song chorus.

For my eighth activity of the week, I was challenged to create a song chorus about a random topic I have chosen. The topic I chose were eggs because they are one of my favorite foods are eggs. In this chorus I used the ABC's tune (alphabet song) as the tune for the chorus. I found this challenging and at the same time interesting.

Actvity 7 Week 1 - Illusions

LI: to create an effective illusion.

For my seventh task for the first week of the summer learning journey I was challenged at drawing an illusion. I saw this in a video and I thought it would be perfect to use as an illusion to draw. In this illusion it tricks your brain into seeing two triangles. There is an outline of the triangle and there is an invisible triangle.

SLJ Week 1 Activity 6

LI: To learn the arrangements of the words in maori sentence's

.

For our sixth activity of the summer learning journey program, we were tasked at re-arranging the Maori words into Maori sentences. There was no slide 7 on the DLO so sadly I couldn't finish the activity completely, so I just completed the work that was available. So for this task we also were challenged at finding the activity they were doing by using a photo.

SLJ Week 1 Activity 4

LI: to make insect art using plant life.

For our fourth summer learning journey activity for the first week we were tasked at making insect art by using the plant life (twigs, leaves, flowers, etc) in school grounds. We picked an insect in mind and gathered the required things to create the insect. I chose a dragon fly so I gathered some twigs, leaves, flowers and some long fuzzy things. I then pieced my parts together to create my dragon fly. I think I could've moved the wings up to show the quadruple wings properly. I named my dragon fly Tastu as it means "dragon" in Japanese. I split 2 leaves into halves to create the wings, I then used the twigs as the body and some flowers as the head and antennae.

SLJ Week 1 Activity 3

LI: to get a greater understanding of the text.

For our third Summer Learning Journey activity LS2 worked with room 5 to create a comic strip of a video of what might they have been saying. There was a video and we had to create a comic of what they might of said in the video. We worked in our pairs and created this DLO. We then watched the video to compare our guess to the actual video.

SLJ Week 1 Activity 2

LI: to write a quality blog comment on someone elses blog that starts a rich learning.

Leaving a quality blog comment on another student’s blog helps us make connections to new learning by asking open ended questions that encourage a reply and motivate the blogger to ask their own question in return. This is how a comment thread starts and when that happens we make connections with a wider audience who we can learn with and from. I commented on both Jessie from Glenn Iness school and Villiami from Glen Brae school.

SLJ Week 1 Activity 1

LI: To collect materials needed to successfully complete our weekly superpower building missions with Nano Girl.

This morning LS2 worked in groups with our Year 4 students to help them create their first Summer Learning Journey blog posts. PBS are still at school this week so finding some of the materials we needed for our treasure hunt was easy. Our challenge is going to be able to find all the materials we need at home now.I found this activity fun an enjoyable because I'm looking forward for doing the Summer learning journey over the holidays. Will you do the Summer learning journey this year?

Reindeer Race | Digital Board Game

LI: To create a digital board game for the juniors

This week we designed digital board games with a Christmas theme to play with the junior students. To play the game successfully they will need to read and follow the instructions, then use their counting skills to move around the board. Today we showed our Year 4 students how to make their own games. It was really fun because I got to use my creativity to create a game, I also got to change the rules and how the game plays out.

Operation Christmas Drop

To write a summary of the story behind the Operation Christmas Drop in your own words.

The Operation Christmas drop makes a big impact to lots of communities around the globe, especially the remote islands off of Guam. This was a massive impact for them as they got the time to enjoy themselves, it also makes them happy how America had the time to do this while being busy with a lot of things. For the last 68 years the men and women of the US airforce who are based at Andersen Airforce Base in Guam have been using a pilot training drill to drop much needed supplies to the people who live on the 60 remote islands that surround Guam. We think that Operation Christmas drop is an amazing organisation of companies that give struggling communities a Christmas experience that they don't get to experience yearly. We think this way because they have done great things to help children and adults in remote islands that don't have the basic needs for a striving community.

Decorating the Tree

LI: to decorate the office Christmas tree.

For our final task for inquiry this term we went in groups and put our decoration designs onto the PBS Christmas tree. Each decoration was labeled with the name of the creator so we could see who made the design. The purpose of our Design Technology challenge was to create a set of Christmas/Holiday decorations that respresented our school and the people in it. We were given a design brief from Mr Johnston and a delivery date. To celebrate the end of this challenge LS2 delivered their completed decorations to Mr Johnston, then hung them on the tree in our school office.

Design Technology Challenge

LI: To design and make a holiday decoration that fits the client brief

This week for inquiry we created an evaluation about the design process we did through sewing. On the DLO we answered questions about what we would do differently, what are the positives, did it suit to our criteria, etc. Doing this allowed us to give us the understanding on what we could improve on next time and what we're good at. In my evaluation my designs suited my criteria and looked good, but I could improve my stitching and the designs I chose. This challenge was fun as it gave me an understanding of what my experience was with sewing.

Flower Crown | Probability

LI: to understand how the probability tree works.

For our math's lesson this week we solved some probability problems and showed our understanding of the problem by writing it on a piece of paper. Before that we watched a video to give us a refresh on how to use the probability tree. The probability tree is a strategy to use when solving questions that involves probability. It divides the combinations into branches and then multiplies each branch that were connected with each other to get the answer we need. One of our problems was the "Flower Crown" equation, we worked in groups/pairs and figured it out in our books.

Step it Up | Art Challenge

LI: to make a description on the art we have made.

This week we used our art from when we used "The Coloring Book" site. I chose the Kanegawa wave. The changes I made were to the sky to change the mood. In the description we had to write about the way we used colors to change the mood and how we used dark or bright colors. I wrote about how depending on the color changes the mood.

Last Tech Session | Plants

LI: to learn about the inner workings of plants.

Today our eighth topic was about plants and plant makers. We learnt about how plants grow, what they need to grow and how they get nutrients from light, o2 (Oxygen) and Co2 (Carbon-dioxide). We went outside in groups and collected 10 leaves each. We went outside the class and searched . We then put them in our book and categorized them in size, texture, thickness, and pattern.

Art Coloring Book

 LI: To experiment with colors.

This morning we tried one of this year’s Kick Start Summer Learning Journey activities. The purpose of this task was to experiment with colours by mixing colours from the original palette with pop colours. This allowed us to recolours famous painting or images of landmarks around the world. I added blue in the sky to give it a kind of daytime mood.

Book Club

LI: to unpack the text together

Chris, Fau, Sulia, Afatia, Azatulah, Vayan, and I were introduced to the activity, Book Club by Mrs Anderson.  Each member of the book club has a role to take each week. The 7 roles are, The Discussion Director, Connector, Summariser, Passage Picker, Word Master, Illustrator and Meeting Report. The book that we read this week was called “Bok Choy” by Paul Mason. The moral of the story was describing the differences between the chinese people compared to the englishman. This was basically unpacking how racism was around those days and how it affected others. From this story we learnt to accept one another despite who we are and how we look. Once we have completed the tasks for our roles, we report back to the group and share our thoughts and ideas. The Discussion Director’s asked questions and guided everybody to be on the right track. The Summariser, picked 20 most important words from the story, to 6, and used it to summarise the text. The Passage Picker would pick a part of the story and write why it’s important to you. The connector had to make connections to themself, to text, and to the world from the book. I enjoyed that we had different roles and tasks to do.

Te Whanau Raukura Performance.

LI: to learn more about how Maori natives used to dance.

Today we were visited by  Bekah and five other people who came and showed us some Maori dances. Te Whanau Raukura is a group of people who preform certain dances in New Zealand. One of the places they have preformed at is the Auckland Museum. They preformed at our school and showed us he tools they used in the dances. The first one they showcased was the poi. They swung the poi in directions to go with the beat of the music. The second one they used was a te rakau, they used the te rakau in a way to sway it in different angles to go with the music. They then showed us the Taiaha, a Taiaha was used for intimidation or offense. We then learnt a little more about the group whilst learning to play a game called "Pukana". I found interesting how they used the different tools in different ways to go with the music.

Exploring our National Current Events

 LI: to identify authors purpose.

Authors write for a purpose, to either inform, entertain, or persuade. These reasons are to persuade, inform or entertain (PIE). Each day, newspaper editors around the world must make desicions about which stories they will run. We explored the different types of current events that are happening in New Zealand, thought about why the story made the news and plotted the location on a google map. What I found interesting is that people have chosen the bird of the year and it was a kakapo.

Provocation: Should Masks be Compulsory on NZ Public Transport

LI: to identify and consider the two perspectives of this provocation to help me form an opinion.

A provocation is an action or speech that triggers strong feelings about a topic. Today we considered both sides of the provocation, ‘Should masks be compulsory on NZ public transport?’ We then used that infomration to help us form an opinion that we could justify with evidence. I think that we should make masks compulsory because we are still in a time where we find traces of Covid19: A virus that spreads easily.

The Charge of the Light Brigade

LI: to learn about the charge of the light brigade

In groups of three we created a DLO about Crimean War, we mostly focused on "The Charge of the Light Brigade". We learnt about when the Crimean war took place, where it was fought. The war was fought in Crimea, Peninsula, Russia. The charge of the light brigade was a task force that followed out a false order that lead them to their death. We also used the poem made by Alfred Lord Tennyson to give us a visualization of what might of happened. The story made by Alfred Lord Tennyson is about how the light brigade was ambushed by Russian soldiers. I found interesting they used horses as transport.

Maths Challenge #3

 LI: to explain our strategy.

This week in maths Afatia, Lukah, Rj, Juel and I created a DLO about our challenge we did in Maths. Our maths challenges were based on our learning about weight. We solved three separate word problems and chose one to make a dlo about. We explained our strategy on how we got the answer. Our problem was to figure out the combination of animals to match the weight of an elephant. I found interesting that we used a variety of animals that are different in multiple ways.

The Gunpowder Plot

LI: to explain in fewer words what the text is about.

This week we learnt about the origin and story of guy Fawkes. Guy Fawkes is a day where we get to send rockets off into the sky, but the origin isn't all happy. Guy Fawkes was originally a person who wanted to kill the king by using barrels of gunpowder. He was found guilty of treason and sentenced to execution. We worked in groups to learn about the origin of Guy Fawkes.

Why is it Important to use our Care Values?

LI: to use transitional vocab in an explanation.

This week we have been revising explanation writing. Next week is our assessment week so we did this collaborative challenge to remind ourselves what is needed when we write explanations. We worked in groups and used TEEL to create an explanation. We then linked the paragraphs together so the paragraph before can flow into the next. The topic of our explanation was "Why's it important to use our Care Values".

Design Tech Flowchart

LI: To create a flowchart of our design process.

For our inquiry topic this term is technology design, while learning this we are using our learning on technology design on making decorations for our Christmas tree coming up. Before we could start making the decorations, we noted what we needed to do, that was the design process. We then created a flowchart in pairs showing the different steps we need to do.

Lowest Common Multiple

 LI: to understand LCM.

This week we learnt about the lowest common multiple (LCM). A lowest common multiple is a lowest number that two numbers share in there multiples (Ex: 5: 5,10,15,20 - 4: 4,8,12,16,20). Both numbers share 20 and its the lowest multiple you can get out of 5 and 4.

Highest Common Factor

LI: to understand how HCF works.

This week we learnt about the highest common factor (HCF). The highest common factor are the two numbers that are the same that is the highest factor. If you the example above it will make more sense. A factor is an multiplication equation you can do to make a certain number (Ex: 24: 24x1,12x2,8x3 etc).

What is Inertia?

 LI: To learn about Inertia

This week we learnt about Inertia, Inertia is a force of physics. There are 3 laws of Inertia. The three are Inertia of Rest, Inertia of Motion and Inertia of Direction. Inertia is the tendency to resist a change of motion. You experience Inertia all the time, for example when in a car and the car suddenly stops you jerk forward because of the change of velocity or speed. For this activity name, name, name, name and I worked collaboratively to create

Choices Explanation

 LI: to write an explanation

Why is it Important to Make Wise Choices?

Have you ever thought about how many marine animals die of plastic pollution? Every year 8 million metric tons of plastic enter our oceans, now they circulate across our oceans harming marine life, polluting our reefs, and being swept up on to our coastlines. How would you feel if your home was overrun by plastic?

Due to our careless acts we put the lives of many marine animals at risk, and some people don’t recognise that. If we throw rubbish on the ground without a second thought, that plastic gets caught up by the wind or leads to our drains. Once the plastic is in our drains it's most likely that it’ll end up in our oceans. Most of the rubbish in our oceans gets swept away by our ocean currents, that takes it to one place. That place is called the sea of plastic, the plastic that travels there builds up so much that it’s not even inhabitable for marine life anymore.

Approximately 8 million pieces of plastic make their way to our oceans. Plastic is a material that has a long durability. So when they enter our waters it means the plastic won't be breaking down for another decade or two. When they do break down they turn into micro plastics that end up in our fish. So when we eat fish the micro plastics not only end up hurting the fish it ends up entering our bodies causing harm for us.

Marine animals die all over the world due to plastic pollution so please for the sake of our marine animals and even for yourself, be aware of the plastic that you throw on the ground. If everyone makes a wise choice, I think we would have a bright future.

_____________________________________________________________________________________

For our task for writing this week we created an explanation about what wise choice we could make. For an example you could make a wise choice by not doing illegal drugs, or helping the environment. I made mine about how our oceans are being polluted by plastic and its harming our marine life. I chose for "Making a wise choice" was that we should be aware of how much rubbish is polluting the enviroment.

If I were Prime Minister

LI: to think about a change I would make.

If I were prime minister I would If I were Prime Minister I would focus on the economic development in New Zealand. Right now New Zealand is under a stage of level 2 quarantine, so it's a struggle to keep the economy going. I think if I focus on that there will be enough money to distribute across the economy.

Political Party Vote

LI: To decide which political party will get your vote by making an informed choice

To decide which political party I would vote for I read a summary of the policies each party wants to introduce should they win the election and the right to form a government to run NZ. Doing this allowed me to make an informed decision. If I was 18 I would vote for Labour because when we had the christchurch attacks they put the country at ease by demanding justice. This means if Labour Won the election in my electorate Shirin Brown would be our member of parliament and Jacinda Ardern would remain the Prime Minister. The Labour party is the left leaning of NZ and National is the right leaning of NZ.

Tuakana Teina

LI: to help the juniors of our school make art.

Tuakan Teina means the relationship of a older person to a younger person. Tuakana Teina relates to what we have done today because one of our younger classrooms visited us to learn how to make pattern art. We taught them how to use the chalk properly, how to hold the glue and how to put the string on. Our art on the other hand was already finished, so we coated our art with glue and let it to dry. Before this we gathered inspiration from online art to add into our art. It helped us a lot when we were trying to draw/design the patterns.

LI: To understand the meaning behind the acronym MRSCGREN.

MRS C GREN is an acronym for the life processes. MRS C GREN stands for: Movement, Respiration, Sensitivity, Cells, Growth, Reproduction, Excretion and Nutrition. These are all the things in something living. For example, plant and humans. To create this DLO we used collaboration, skimming and scanning for key words to help us select and reject information needed to create our DLO.

Sunflower Painting

LI: to paint a still life of sunflowers in the style of Vincent Van Gogh.

For our art session we did some art that was based on the style of Vincent van Gogh. Vincent van Gogh is a famous artist from the 1853 to 1890. In his time he wasn't known as a famous artist. He made over 900 paintings and he only sold 2 of them. We chose to make our paintings based on one of Vincents paintings called "Sunflowers". We used different techniques like dabbing, twist and flick, and straight strokes.
