Anime List Poem

LI: To create a list poem based off of an anime character.

One of our anime based tasks were to create a list poem based off of an anime. For this task we chose to use the Pirate crew called the Strawhat Pirates. This group comes from the anime of One Piece, One Piece is a boy with a dream of becoming the King of the pirates. This poem is called "A Dream", we chose to pick that title as in the poem it shows the goals of each individual Strawhat pirate.

Anime Cinquain Poem

LI: To write a cinquain poem that describes a character from your favourite online game

To continue our Distance Learning our new topic was Manga and Anime. For our Writing we had created a Cinquain poem based on an Anime or Manga Character. Our character was Monkey D Luffy from the manga series One Piece. It was a fun and interesting task to do as we were able to write about our favorite characters as well as being able to collaborate with friends.

History of Manga

LI: To read for meaning and understanding For Reading we were learning about Anime and Manga, using this topic to improve our comprehension skills. Manga, is known as a Japanese Comic. It has widely spread throughout the world, and is a very popular trend. Manga and Anime have become a big part of Japanese Culture. There are Manga and Anime such as One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball that have taken over the world.

Our task was to make a DLO (Digital Learning Object) about the History of Manga, describing the origin and what it is?

Akatsuki Shoes

LI: to create a shoe design based off of an anime.

For our anime week LS2 designed shoes based off one of their favorite anime. For mine I chose to chose an akatsuki theme, because this theme comes from one of my favorite anime called Naruto. Naruto is about a young boy burdened with a beast named Kurama, the nine tailed fox. Although he had this monster inside of him he pushed through his obstacles to reach his goal of becoming hokage. Along the way of Naruto's journey a group called the Akatsuki seeks for the nine tail's power.

Tidy Drive

LI: To tidy up our Google Drive so that all our work is filed correctly and shared with both teachers.

For the last week of term 3 LS2 cleaned up their drive to insure there is space for required files, such as things for school. LS2 knows the reason to do this and how it could help us, through this blogpost we'd like to show you why and how to do this. First you should always move the files to the assigned folder. If you are unsure of the files folder, put it into a folder with low files in it. This could help freeing up some space in your drive for future projects.

3D House

LI:To use the most efficient maths strategy.

For the first Maths lockdown challenge we figured out how many wall and roof pieces the world’s first 3D printed house has. We read the questions then we did 195 + 85 =  280.We did the rest of the questions as you can see above in the DLO we created as a group.

The Letter Q

LI: to extend our vocabulary with the letter Q

For Reading we were learning about words starting with the Letter Q. We started off by reading a text talking about the origin of the Letter Q, and where it came from. Our task was to create a DLO (Digital Learning Object) showcasing words we know starting with the Letter Q, and words we don’t know starting with Q.

It was really fun and interesting doing because we got to learn new vocabulary, and we were able to do this activity with our friends.

Color Wheel | Tech

LI: to understand the basics of colors.

Last week friday our session for tech this week was to understand the basics of colors. First we put on our old shirts and we painted the primary colors onto three peices of paper. We then colored secondary colors onto three other pieces of paper. After that we then tinted or shaded one of the colors from our palet with black or white. A tint is to make a color lighter and a shade is to make a color darker. At the end of the session we put our colors on one big peice of paper and presented as a palet of our created colors.

The Ancient Olympics

LI: to learn about the ancient olympics.

PREZI LINK (You may need to click on the redirect)

Last week we created learnt about the ancient olympics so we created a presentation about it. To create the presentation we either used, google slides, prezi or powtoon. We worked in our inquiry groups to create a presentation with facts, the five days, and information about the ancient olypics. After we had finished our presentation we presented them to the class.

Haoura Poster

LI: to link Hauora to the olympics.

This week we finished off our canva posters of how olympians manage their health such as Taha tinana (physical), Taha wairua (Spiritual), Taha Hinengaro (Mentality) and Taha whanau (Social). We linked haoura to how olympians handle their mental and physical health.

Hauora and the Olympics

This week our focus was to write down the different feelings that come with losing and winning an Olympic medal. For winning we noted down mostly positives things such as pride, happy, victory. As for losing we noted the opposite. We learnt that to embrace both of these is having all walls standing up, as we lose we learn from our mistakes making us wiser, as we acheive our goals we can set higher goals that challenge us. This task helped us understand how atheletes work under stress.

Y-Chart | Violet Walrond

LI: to understand what the athelets were thinking.

This week we have been focusing on the Olyimpics due to its beggining. Since our focus for reading is the olympics we used a photo and linked them to 3 catergories (what they were; wondering, thinking, feeling/seeing). We then added text boxes answering each of those certain catergories.

Medal Tally

LI: to understand the problem and hand using strategies.

For this olympic challenge we counted the medals of the top 10 countries to create a medal tally. The medal count was from two dates 1986-2012 and the 2016 olympics. Once we count up all the medals from the top 10 countries  we put ranked them from 1 to 10. The strategy that we used was addition. The country with the most medals was the USA with 2673 olympic medals.

Olympics Provocation

LI: to gather information from the text to make an informed opinion.

For Reading we were learning about what a Provocation is. A Provocation is a certain topic that triggers emotions and feelings and lets people express their personal opinions on the topic.

The topic for our Provocation was the nations that hosted the Olympics, should they spend so much money on the Olympic facilities. Japan spent 15.4 billion dollars on their facilities for the Olympics.

To continue our learning Reading we also read a book about the Olympics, on Violet Walrond. Reading the book we had to answer a set of questions with our Reading Group. Tese helped us with our comprehension and inferring skills.

Flow Charts & Radio Chart

LI: to understand the flow charts and the radio charts.

For our tech session this week we revised on flow charts and we starting working with the radio feature of the kittenbot. In the slide above we re-arranged the shapes to show a clear chart of the example code would look like. After the flow charts we learnt how to communicate through our kitten bots using the feature called "radio". We could send short messages and display them using the LEDs.

Olynpics Challenge 1

LINK TO VIDEO

Since the olympics is currently happening, our maths group have 8 olympic challenges for us to complete. This challenge was about Michael Phelps and the events he competed in. Our questions were: On average, every swim stroke Michael Phelps take gets him 2 metres down the pool. Michael comped in 8 different events in the beijing olympics in 2008. In total how many metres did Michael swim for his gold medals?

FInally, how many strokes did Michael have to take in total for all o his events if Michael can propel himself 2 metres with each stroke. The strategies we used addition and division, first we added up all the metres Michael swans and then divided it by two because he advanced 2 metres down the pool.

Robotics in the Stars

LI: To try and get the mBot to draw a star shape for Matariki

This week the year 8s of LS2 coded the mbots to drive in a star alligned path. To make the code we used different action codes (moving, wheels, etc). We used a code that allows the mbot to move forwards, left and right, and the seconds the mbot has to do the task at. We drew a star on a large piece of paper and we tested our mbot on the paper. After we have tested our first one we made changes to further improve our mbot code.

Matariki brochure

LI: to have a greater understanding of the celebration of Matariki.

For Matariki we made a brochure for the celebration. In our brochure we created different parts with different topics explaining the harvest, traditions, and many more. In this activity we also showed the origin of Matariki and how it was named.

Birds & Matariki

LI: to understand the way of harvesting whilst Matariki.

This week we have been learning about Matariki due to the celebration in New Zealand. For one of our tasks we created a DLO about the harvesting of Matariki and the birds that come with it. In our DLO we explained how the birds were preserved for the feast and a biography of the different birds they used in early times.

Matariki

LI: to strengthen our connection to Matariki.

Matariki is the Maori new year celebration. It takes places each year when the cluster of stars known as Matariki are seen in our skies. The new year is a time for new beginnings and is a time to embrace tradition.

Perseverance

LI: to edit our writing using DRAFT

To continue our learning on poetry and abstract nouns we wrote another poem about the noun.

Our abstract noun was Perseverance, meaning dedication and have the determination to keep going forward. In our poem we used the 5 senses and figurative language to elevate our writing. After finishing our poem we used DRAFT to correct and fix our writing.

An abstract noun is an intangible object, most of the time it is like feelings such as Happiness and Envy.

DRAFT is a structure used to critique and fix texts. DRAFT stands for: Delete, Rearrange, Add, Fix, and Talk.

Rock, Paper, Scissors

LI: to learn how to code the microbit to play rock, paper, scissors and to understand the code through a flow chart.

This week for our tech session we learnt to code rock, paper, scissors into our Kittenbots. This code works by the shake of the Kittenbot, initiating the code itself. Once Kittenbot has been shaken the code will send a signal to pick a random number out of 1 to 3, once the bot has picked a number this number will be used as a symbol for the LED lights (if 1 is the number; it will show scissors). Above there is a flowchart showing the simplistic way of explaining this code.

Friendship

LI:To write an abstract noun senses poem.

For Writing we were learning about abstract nouns, metaphors, and about the 5 senses. Learning about these things helped us create our poem and be able to make it creatively as well as have a good structure. Each sentence of our poem was for each sense, so it smells and much more. Also our topic for our poem was any abstract noun.

An abstract noun is a noun that is intangible, like a feeling such as love & hatred.

Our 5 senses are Sight, Smell, Feel, Taste, and our Hearing. These are what we use in our everyday lives, and are senses we use to elevate our writing.

A Metaphor is a speech term, part of figurative language. Metaphors are used to compare two things without using the words ‘like’ or ‘as’.

Did this Happen?

 L.I: To consider both perspectives.

Today we were answering what happened if it is true or not  we wrote the evidence if it is true and the evidence if it is false. We picked a Maori story and added the evidence towards two POV’s (Point of View): True and False. Than we added our personal opinion on the story.

Maui & The Sun Venn Diagram

L.I: Find as many similarities and differences as you can between the video and the text of ‘The Beginning’.

This week we have been focusing on the start of the story ‘ Maui and the Sun’. We have written about the video version and the written version of Maui And The Sun. In the middle we have written what things do the Video and Written version have in common. I enjoyed this because we learnt the about the similarities of the Video version and the Written version.

Maui and the Sun | Main Ideas

LI: To identify the main ideas in a text.

This week we are learning about Maori version of start of time. In this summary we talked about Rangitoto (The Sky) and Papatuanuku (The Earth). The beginning is about how the sky and the earth sheltered their children from the outside. For the summary we chose 20 important words related to the text. Then we chose 6 most important, after we used those words to create the summary in the DLO.

Te Reo Maori Summary

LI: To explain in fewer words what the text is about.

Shoe Narrative

LI: to use the 5 senses and personification to show the text.

For writting this week we used the narrative frame work to create our narrative we will be using in a few weeks time. We made a narritive based upon an image of worn out converse shoes. We were tasked at creating a narritive using the five senses and some extra detail to pollish our planning for our writing. Our narrative is called one step at a time, it is a story of a pair of shoes switching from owner to owner, and at one point he was left behind. We then created a DLO about the narrative itslelf.

Flow Charts & Dice | Tech

LI: to learn how to use flow charts to plan coding

LINK TO DLO
For tech this week we learnt about flow charts. Flow charts are the base product of coding, flow charts explain certain codes through simple lines and shapes to easily allow the person to understand the code itself. We also used the kittenbots to show patters and numbers. We made a code to show a number between 0 - random number and it would show the number on shake.

PB4L- Expectations in Class

LI: to follow rules and expectations, expected from teachers.

This weeks PB4L learning is about following classroom rules and expectations. PB4L is a acronym describing Positive Behavior for Learning. PB4L helps us understand the correct behavior for inside classroom learning and outer learning. This consist of Classroom discussions, walking to assembly, behaviour on school trips, wet day procedure eg. respecting wet day monitors. All of these prospects will help us develop a strong and healthy learning enviroment. I found this activity fun as it allowed me to refresh what should be expected in class.

Bulding an Mbot

LI: to understand how the mbot is put together in case of any problems.

This week for coding we re-assebled an mbot. First we got into pairs and dis-assembled the mbot into seperate peices. We then re-assebled them back into their original state. We then tested a code on the Mbot to see if our re-assemblance was sufficiant. I enjoyed this session as I learnt what is inside an mbot itself.

Student Led Conferences

LI: To share our learning with our families.

This week we had our student led confereces, in the student led conference we introduced our families to our teachers, we then walked around the room explaining to them my learning with the posters on the wall showing all of our work throught term 1 & 2. The student led conference were a chance to let our families see what we have been doing whilst in school.

Book Week Celebration 2021

LI: to celebrate our Book Week

Today PBS celebrated our Book Week of 2021, this celebrates our learning through books. This event allows seniors to give our juniors the chance to start their reading journey. We took pictures of the different classes on the stage of the hall. After we were greeted by a visit from Spider-Man talking about how books can benefit in our everday lives and how reading is a superpower. We then read books to the juniors and ate our lunches. We then carried on with our lunch.

Screw Group Diagram

LI: to create a group diagram of the screw

For our inquiry task this term we are learning about simple machines and toys. For one of our tasks we created individual diagrams of one of the simple machines called the screw. In the DLO we had created a 25 word summary about what a screw.

Being A Jedi | Coding

LI: to code the mBot to move backwards with the ultrasonic senser.

For our second tech session for coding we learnt to code our mBots to sense whats in front of it with a range of cm. In our coding program we used all of the codes above in the picture to create the actual code to initiate the ultrasonic senser. In the code we used "IF - THEN - ELSE" code whitch would allow the robot to process the code easily (e.g: IF mBot senses something THEN mBot will move backwards ELSE it will keep moving forward). Once the mBot has sensed that there is something in front of it, the mBot will move backwards due to the code we used with the ultrasonic senser. Moving our hand in sync with the Mbot will keep the mBot moving backwards until we take away our hand.

Reading Pathway

LI: to recall our books in the last 7 years.

For book week LS2 created a DLO on the books we have read in the past 7 years. We also explained the plot of the books and why we enjoyed reading them. This DLO shows how far I have changed when it comes to books. I enjoyed this very much as I got to remember the past books I read.

Cinquain Poem

LI: To write a cinquain poem to describe a sports star

We have been learning to write cinquain poems to help us strengthen our connections to description.
A cinquain poem has 5 lines. Each line has a different purpose. Line 1 is a noun which is a name.
Line 2 has 2 adjectives that describe the noun. Each line holds different powerful words to describe/link
to the person the poem is made about. I enjoyed this activity because got to write a poem about one of
my role models, I got to express what I see in Lionel into a poem.

Shameful Stain on New Zealand

LI: To evaluate (form an opinion) the text and respond to the provocation

We read the article “Shameful stain on NZ’s history”, an article about New Zealand’s History on the racial discrimination on the Pasifika community. Our provocation was “Should the Government of today apologise for the dawn raids of yesterday?”.

In order to respond to this provocation we needed to evaluate the text by looking deeply at both perspectives. A perspective is point of view, or the opinion of one side. When exploring both sides of this provocation, we formed our personal opinions based on the information we read, and the information we already knew. In our DLO we have shared our different perspectives and have made an informed collaborative response to the question we were asked. We all agree that an apology is owed. It is important that this happens. What we didn’t agree on was who should give the apology. Our current government was not the party who organised the dawn raids. The party who are historically responsible should be the ones to step up and show remorse.

ASB Get Wise

LI: to make wise choices with your money

We had a visit from ASB who taught us to be smart with our money and to make responsible decisions on how to use your money. To help us learn these two things we played a money game about going to Fiji. We were given $1800 fake money to initiate the game, the factors of the game comes in things to pay for; passport, plane ticket, accomadation, food, activities, insurance. There were also enjoyment points for the factor (Good accomadation: 6 enjoyment points). The cheaper the factor the lower the enjoyment points are. Many other factors can come into play within the game; Insurance (Pays off any bills from bad sittuations), credit card (Pays for things & has to be paid back). The team with the most enjoyment points win, fortunantly all of our teams got the same amount of points.

I have enjoyed this game because it has taught us some smart ways to save money and it was very fun.

Duffy Assembly

LI: To understand how reading can change one's life.

Today we had Marc from Duffy come and talk to us about the importance of reading and how reading can make a big impact on your life.  Although Marc had some challenges in his life he used reading as a tool to get through the hard times.  Marc believes that there is only CANs and not CAN’Ts. I felt the story that marc had said was really inspiring, his influence should be a role model for anyone who is going throuhg tough times.

Key Compentencies

LI: To compare the Key Competencies we think we will use on camp and the Key Competencies we actually used.

Before we went to camp our challenge was to think about when we might use the Key Competencies as we faced the challenges.  When we came back from camp we looked at this and compared how we thought we would use the Key Competencies and how we actually used them. I found this activity fun as it allowed me to answer what I did linked to the key competencies.

5 Minutes of Camp

For our camp celebration task was to create a recount of a past activity we have done while at camp. The activity I chose to write was archery, the point of this task is to paint a picture through a recount.

Arrows of Hope

As I walked up to the platform, I could feel the adrenaline run throughout my body. A fear of missing shot through me as I knew my group was watching. I took one step, another, and another, and I finally got to the platform.  As I got up to the platform I felt a sudden breeze across my face.

First I grasped the bow and with the other hand I took an arrow out of the tube. I felt a heavy weight on my shoulders as this was the first time I have held an actual weapon. As I put the arrow through the bow I remembered the five f’s; footing, fletcher, fingers, face and fire. Everything seemed right so with excitement I shot the first arrow, the arrow flew faster than I could blink and in an instant it missed the target.

Second, I drew my second arrow. I felt I needed to get the target as I had missed the first shot. I did everything, the f’s, my aim, and so on. With my second arrow I pulled the string back, my hand quivering the more I pulled the string back. I let go of the fletcher and the second arrow was released. In a span of one second it missed the target.

After the second arrow I took another arrow. In frustration with myself I drew the next arrow, I connected the fletcher with the string and shot the next arrow with hope. In my surprise I had shot the blue circle. In the short amount of time I had feltI had achieved something.

After the activity I felt a sense of achievement as I walked away proud that I had hit the blue circle on the target.

Tech Reflection | Wood Working

LI: to learn how to create a joint.

For this session of tech our year 8's got up to creating their joints in their wood works. This week the tools we use were the Tri-square, ruler, Saw, Bench Saw. A joint is what holds one piece of wood in place as foundation. The joint will be a piece of wood that has a square like hole in it for the other piece of wood to fill, creating a strong foundation. Some of us had finished and some have still needed time to complete the task. I found this session exciting as we got to do use actual tools.

Celebrating the Summer Learning Journey

LI: to celebrate our PBS SLJ participants.

Over the holiday's our senior students participated in a holiday learning program call the Summer Learning journey. Us as a school found the activities included in the program really interesting and we found them to be enjoyable. Other than the activities Nano girl kept us occupied with fun experiments to every Monday. To celebrate our achievements PBS held a special assembly with new guests; Mrs Grant and Mrs Paleti. They presented the certificates and the prizes for the most exceptional bloggers over the holiday period.

Wood Work | Tech

LI: to learn how to plan/measure a wood work plan.

For our tech session this week we made our first official plan. We were given our plannings of our eight designs and we picked one. We were then given a new piece of paper, a plank of wood and a ruler. Now we have gotten all of our materials we could start with our plan, first I started with the base and the incline, then I started working up. My design I have chosen was a plane.

Reciprocal Reading

LI : To write HOT questions.

Blurb: This week our group did reciprocal reading. The text we read was Puaki. The text was informing us about the importance and the stories behind a Ta-Moko. In the text there were four origins of four people explaining how and why they got their ta-moko. In our reciprocal reading each person of the group was assigned a role, a clarifier, A questionnaire, A predictor, a summariser and the leader. When each page was read each person would do their role (e.g: predictor predicts next page). While doing this we were tasked at creating HOT (Higher Order Thinking) Questions part of the text.

Cybersmart Tip

LI: to give a helpful tip to people who are starting with chromebooks.

For this weeks cyber smart challenge, I was tasked at creating a DLO about a tip I could give to people who are new to learning with Chromebooks. My tip was the standard netbook hold. In this DLO I explained why you should hold your netbook properly, and how to hold your netbook. I found this task fun as I got to inform the year 4s and 5s about keeping your chromebook safe throughout in school grounds.

Maths Challenge | Distance Learning

LI: to understand the place values of tenths, ones, hundredths, etc.

This week for our maths challenge I was challenged at writing down the largest six digit to the lowest six digit number. In this challenge the task at hand was figuring out the six digit number based a pon the clues given throughout the DLO. In between them were questions such as: Write down the largest six digit number with a two in the tenths place. I found this challenge interesting as I got to think harder about the number I was going to write down.

Virtual Adventure | Distance Learning

LI: To plan a virtual trip around the world

Our challenge was to create a map using google/mymaps and drop pins on the locations visited. The next part of this challenge was to find the capital city of each place and include it in the information in the pin. I found it quite hard to find countries I want to go to because I don't have many places I would want to go. I enjoyed finding out the capitals of the different countries I picked.

Cultural Art | Distance Learning

LI: To create a piece of cultural art.

Inspired by art creations by Raku Inoue we went outside and collected leaves, twigs, and other plant debris to create our own cultural pattern or symbol. I found it hard to find a variety of leaves i could pick from because all of the plant life at my house looks the same. I enjoyed how I got to show my creativity through leaves and twigs. An interesting fact I found out about Raku Inoue is that he used to have a profession in polymer clay sculpting. The name of my cultural art is Family Flower, the meaning behind the art is that each pedal is a member of my family and the stem is foundation of my family.
